Magnetic Resonance MR

Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is a technique which does not contain harmful X-rays (radiation), it provides vibrations of the hydrogen atoms in body in a strong magnetic field with radio waves and by this way it provides examination of body parts. In an isolated room, patient lay down on a table in a very strong, tunnel shape magnet and remains like this without movement. During MR examination, patient has to lay down without moving but he can take breath in a relaxed manner. In some examinations you may be asked to hold your breath for a short time.

Power of the magnet is at least 10 000 times more than the magnetic force we exposed on earth. For this reason, before entering MR room, one has to leave all metal removable things such as belt, hair clip, jewelry, coins, keys, dentures outside. The magnetic field makes magnetic cards such as credit cards, CDs, tapes unusable. Radio waves can be found in the environment only while the analysis is being done. During operation the device creates a lot of noise due to complex mechanical systems which changes intensity and direction of magnetic field. Especially during operation, it disrupt pacemakers, because of this patients with pacemakers, absolutely, is not allowed to have MR examination. If the body prosthesis materials contain iron or steel (we call such materials MR incompatibles), the areas with these metal parts can not be examined and image can not be obtained from such areas. For example, if a patient has MR incompatible hip prosthesis, rectal, prostate or cervix imaging may not be possible. MR does not harm the patient with prosthesis, but related area can not be examined. There is no known and proven harmful effects of MR. The differences between computerized tomography and MR are, MR examination has longer duration and it has mild degree of noise. During examination, for better examination of diseased region and the normal formations, it may be necessary to give a small amount of medication to blood vessels. Magnetic resonance imaging is the highest-resolution method for especially examination of soft tissues. Depending on water content of tissues, with different sequences, information can be obtained about the desired area.

Because MR can examine many different chemical and physical properties of the tissue, examination duration is longer (20-30 minutes). Sometimes, in order to distinguish tissue with disease from healthy tissue, specific drugs for MR can be given from rectum (by enema) or from blood vessels.
By using Philips 1.5 tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging device (MR), GE 1.5 tesla magnetic resonance device, routine imaging such as brain, neck, spine, thorax, abdomen, pelvic, extremity, extremity joints, brain angiography, abdominal angiography, peripheral angiography and special imaging such as bos dynamics, spectroscopy, breast, functional diffusion-perfusion, colon angiography can be done..
